KEWOTA GEARS UP FOR ’10K STEPS FOR MY TEACHER’ 2025 EDITION

Background of KEWOTA

The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) stands as the only women’s teachers association in Africa, dedicated to empowering female educators across Kenya. Founded to advocate for the professional, economic, and social welfare of women teachers, KEWOTA has played a pivotal role in fostering leadership, career growth, and overall well-being among its members. Through strategic programs and partnerships, KEWOTA continues to champion the rights of women educators, ensuring they have the necessary resources and support to thrive in their profession.

KEWOTA’s Focus on Teachers’ Mental Health

Recognizing the immense pressures and challenges teachers face, KEWOTA has made mental health a priority. The association acknowledges that the well-being of teachers directly impacts the quality of education in Kenya. Stress, burnout, and other mental health challenges have increasingly affected educators, making it imperative to provide support systems tailored to their unique needs. KEWOTA has actively promoted mental wellness through advocacy, workshops, counseling services, and initiatives like “10K Steps For My Teacher,” which bring awareness to this critical issue while mobilizing resources for sustainable solutions.

10K Steps For My Teacher Initiative

The “10K Steps For My Teacher” initiative was launched in 2024 as a flagship campaign to promote mental health awareness and raise funds for a state-of-the-art wellness center for teachers. The walk aims to encourage physical activity, create a supportive community, and generate funds to establish a dedicated space where educators can access mental health support, wellness programs, and counseling services.

A Look Back at the 1st Edition

The inaugural edition of the “10K Steps For My Teacher” walk in 2024 was a resounding success. Held in Nairobi, the event attracted hundreds of teachers, students, stakeholders, and mental health advocates. The initiative received overwhelming support from various education sector partners, government representatives, and corporate sponsors. Participants walked to show solidarity with teachers struggling with mental health issues and to raise funds for the wellness center project. The event not only created awareness but also emphasized the importance of prioritizing educators’ well-being in Kenya’s education system.

The 2nd Edition: Bigger and Better

Building on the success of the first event, KEWOTA is proud to announce the 2nd edition of “10K Steps For My Teacher,” scheduled for May 25, 2025, at Ulinzi Sports Complex, Langata Road, Nairobi. This year’s edition promises to be even bigger, with a larger turnout expected, increased partnerships, and a greater impact in advocating for teachers’ mental health.

What to Expect

  • Increased Participation: This year’s walk aims to bring together an even larger number of teachers, students, parents, corporate partners, and mental health advocates.
  • Corporate and Institutional Partnerships: More stakeholders from the education and wellness sectors are coming on board to support and amplify the cause.
  • Fundraising for the Wellness Center: All proceeds from the walk will go towards the construction and development of the wellness center, ensuring long-term mental health support for teachers.

Who Can Participate, and How?

Teachers: The Champions of Change

As the primary beneficiaries of this initiative, teachers are encouraged to participate in large numbers. This walk is an opportunity for educators to advocate for their mental well-being while contributing to the establishment of a serene, safe, and supportive wellness center designed specifically for them.

Students (Above 13 Years): Learning to Support Our Educators

With parental and teacher consent, students can take part in the walk and gain firsthand insight into the challenges teachers face. This experience will not only foster empathy but also cultivate a culture of appreciation for the heroes shaping their futures.

Schools: A Community Effort

Schools—comprising teachers, parents, students, and staff—can show solidarity by participating as a team. By partnering with KEWOTA, schools can also contribute to the fundraising drive through various structured forms and donation cards available at KEWOTA.

Parents: Advocates for Quality Education

Quality education begins with mentally healthy teachers. Parents are invited to walk in support of the educators shaping their children’s futures. Beyond participation, parents can also encourage their children to raise funds through their networks—friends, churches, and community groups—to further support this noble cause.

Community-Based Organizations: Making an Impact

This event is a perfect platform for community-based organizations to contribute to a meaningful cause while networking with like-minded entities. Organizations can support the initiative through sponsorships and team registrations.

Corporates: Investing in the Future of Education

A nation’s success is deeply tied to the quality of its education, which in turn depends on the well-being of teachers. Corporations can fulfill their social responsibility by sponsoring the walk, partnering with KEWOTA, and enrolling employees in this impactful team-building activity.
