Do not wait until the farewell cake is cut to start planning your life after RETIREMENT.

Last week in Kiambu County,

A team from KEWOTA interacted with men and women who have spent decades in classrooms, staffrooms, and school compounds. Through their career as educators, they have shaped the lives of many people, maybe even generations. And now, they are approaching a new chapter in life as their retirement continues to draw nearer.

The Kiambu KEWOTA office, together with officers from KEWOTA Head Office, came in with a powerful and hopeful message

“Do not wait until the farewell cake is cut to start planning your life after retirement.”

For typical teachers, retirement comes like a sudden bell. One term you are fully in charge. The next, you are clearing your desk. Due to such cases of unprepared retirement, KEWOTA came in to intervene. KEWOTA focused on hope, control, empowerment and dignity.

Facilitators broke down the realities of pension processing, income transition, lifestyle adjustment, and the emotional shift that retirement brings.

Teachers asked honest questions:

  • What happens to my medical cover?
  • How do I invest wisely?
  • How do I remain relevant?
  • How do I avoid becoming financially dependent?

And KEWOTA had answers.

Through its welfare and empowerment programs, KEWOTA is intentionally building a safety net for teachers beyond active service. Members were taken through financial literacy pathways that encourage early saving and smart investment while still in employment. They were introduced to income-generating opportunities designed specifically for teachers transitioning into retirement.

The KEWOTA Laptop Program, run in partnership with credible suppliers, ensures that teachers can access affordable technology even on structured payment plans. For retirees, digital brings opportunities. These include consulting, online tutoring, digital business, and staying connected in a fast-changing world.

The MWALIMU AI initiative was discussed. Many nearing retirement realized that technology is not an enemy of age but an ally of experience. With the right tools, retired teachers can mentor, create content, offer advisory services, and even start knowledge-based enterprises from home.

Health and mental wellness were also central to the conversation. KEWOTA reminded members that retirement is not the end of productivity. It is a transition into a different rhythm of life. Through wellness programs and community initiatives such as the 10,000 Steps for My Teacher movement, teachers are encouraged to prioritize physical and emotional health long before retirement day arrives.

One of the most reassuring highlights is KEWOTA’s commitment to health security through support on SHA contributions for retired teachers. Many educators expressed concern about medical cover once they exit formal employment, especially as health needs increase with age.

KEWOTA steps in to ease this burden by guiding retired members on SHA registration and, through structured welfare support mechanisms, helping facilitate payment arrangements so they do not lose access to essential healthcare. This initiative ensures that teachers who have spent their lives caring for others can retire with peace of mind, knowing their health remains protected.

The conversation around structured income continuity through KEWOTA programs such as Mwalimu Na Tank, table banking chamas, and the Association’s business support initiatives was also a highlight. Teachers were shown how investing in income generating assets like water distribution through Mwalimu Na Tank can create steady community based revenue even after retirement.

Through table banking groups, members can pool savings, access low interest loans, and grow disciplined investment habits before they exit formal employment. KEWOTA’s business support programs further guide teachers in identifying viable ventures, conducting basic feasibility assessments, branding, and managing small enterprises sustainably. With KEWOTA’s support, retirement should not mean stopping income.

KEWOTA inspired teachers that instead of seeing retirement as a cliff, they have to see it as a bridge. A bridge into entrepreneurship, mentorship, and a well-planned, financially stable season of life.
